Is the development of new energy vehicles solving pollution or merely shifting the problem? While the development of new energy vehicles does address pollution, it also introduces some new challenges. However, it would be simplistic to claim that it merely shifts the problem.

New energy vehicles have achieved significant results in reducing traditional exhaust pollution. Pure electric vehicles emit almost zero exhaust during operation, effectively reducing pollutants such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, and lowering the incidence of urban smog. Electric motors operate at approximately 20 decibels less noise than internal combustion engines, with particularly significant noise reduction effects at low speeds, thereby reducing noise pollution.

During the battery production stage, there are concerns about high energy consumption and environmental pollution. Taking lithium-ion batteries as an example, their production relies on the extraction of rare metals such as lithium and cobalt. Large-scale mining activities may lead to extensive land excavation, exacerbating soil erosion issues. If wastewater generated during mining is discharged without proper treatment, it can contaminate surrounding water resources.

In China’s current power structure, thermal power generation still dominates, meaning that a significant portion of the electricity used by new energy vehicles indirectly originates from coal-fired power generation. While new energy vehicles achieve zero tailpipe emissions during use, carbon emissions still exist from the power generation end.

As the number of new energy vehicles continues to grow, the volume of discarded batteries is also increasing. If the recycling system is inadequate, harmful substances may be washed into surface water and groundwater by rainwater, leading to water pollution and posing risks to ecosystems and human health. These issues should not be used to dismiss the contributions of new energy vehicles in addressing pollution.

Is the development of new energy vehicles solving pollution or merely shifting the problem? The new challenges arising from the development of new energy vehicles can be gradually addressed through technological advancements and policy improvements.
