Global sales of new energy vehicles surge, and the United States lags behind! The latest data released by market research firm Rho Motion on Tuesday showed that global sales of new energy vehicles, including pure electric and hybrid models, increased significantly in March this year, with sales in China and Europe leading the world.

Specific data show that global sales of new energy vehicles reached 1.7 million last month, a year-on-year surge of 29%. Global sales of new energy vehicles reached 4.1 million in the first quarter. Regional segmentation data showed that China’s new energy vehicle sales in March were close to 1 million, and sales in the first quarter reached 2.4 million, a year-on-year increase of 36%; European new energy vehicle sales in March were 400,000, a year-on-year increase of 24%, and sales in the first quarter reached 900,000.

Sales in the United States and Canada in March were 200,000, an increase of 12%, but slightly lower than the 13% sales increase in other parts of the world. The increase in global new energy vehicle sales in March continued the overall growth since the first quarter of this year. North American sales were 500,000 in the first quarter, while sales in the rest of the world were 300,000 in the first quarter.

Rho Motion data shows that against the backdrop of a surge in overall new energy vehicle sales in Europe, there are huge differences among countries. Reuters reported that changes in emission targets and regulations have driven the growth of electric vehicle sales in the UK, Germany and Italy.

Pure electric vehicle sales in the UK, Germany and Italy increased by 42%, 37% and 64% respectively. The UK market hit a record high in March 2025, with monthly electric vehicle sales exceeding 100,000 for the first time.

But the French market has declined. The reduction in subsidies in the French new energy vehicle market has a greater impact on sales, which have fallen by 18% so far this year. Among them, pure electric vehicles fell by 5%, and plug-in hybrid vehicles fell by 47%.

In the United States, Trump’s tariff policy is expected to have a huge impact on the new energy vehicle market. Rho Motion data shows that about 2/5 of electric vehicles sold in the US market last year were imported. Although companies can bear part of the costs brought by tariffs, it is expected that American consumers will eventually face rising car prices, and both fuel vehicles and electric vehicles will be affected.

The US technology media “CNET” website believes that it is not clear whether the Trump administration will revoke the electric vehicle purchase incentive plan launched during the Biden administration. Once the incentives are reduced, it is estimated that the US electric vehicle market will collapse in the second half of this year.

The automotive industry media “Carscoops” website believes that the proportion of electric vehicle sales in new car sales in the United States is still not high. In the rest of this year, electric vehicle sales may be hit by tariff challenges, and car companies that are highly dependent on imported materials will be particularly affected.

Global new energy vehicle sales surge, and the United States lags behind! It is worth noting that Tesla’s sales in the US market plummeted by nearly 9% in the first quarter of this year. Before Tesla’s first quarter report was officially released, market analysts expected that Tesla’s quarterly revenue and earnings per share would continue to fall after last year’s fourth quarter report.
