New energy vehicles are a crucial direction for the green development and transformation of the global automotive industry, and an essential path for my country to move from a major automobile producer to a leading automobile power.
Since the State Council issued the “New Energy Vehicle Industry Development Plan (2021-2035)” in 2020, my country’s new energy vehicle industry has achieved historic achievements, adding new momentum to the global automotive industry.
01 Market Size Triples
Sales of new energy vehicles jumped from 1.367 million units in 2020 to 12.866 million units in 2024, ranking first globally for 10 consecutive years. The proportion of new car sales increased from 5.4% to 40.9%, creating a “China speed” of continuous rapid growth in major consumer goods. From January to August this year, production and sales of new energy vehicles exceeded 9.6 million units, a year-on-year increase of over 36%. The proportion of new energy passenger vehicle sales in retail sales has exceeded 50% for six consecutive months, achieving a new historical breakthrough.
02 Significantly Improved Technological Level
The average driving range of new energy vehicles is approaching 500 kilometers, essentially resolving the “range anxiety” problem. The cost of individual power battery cells has decreased by 30%, lifespan has increased by 40%, and charging speed has tripled. The cost per kilowatt of fuel cell systems has decreased by 80%. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles have seen significant improvements in thermal efficiency, fuel consumption, and overall range. The proportion of new passenger vehicles equipped with combined driver assistance functions increased from 16.2% in 2020 to 62.6% in the first seven months of this year, making driving increasingly easier and more enjoyable.
03 Increasingly Complete Industrial System
my country produces and supplies approximately 70% of the world’s key battery materials, 60% of power batteries, and over 60% of new energy vehicles. Except for a few remote areas, charging infrastructure has achieved “full coverage in every county,” and “full coverage in every township” in 13 provinces. Over 95% of highway service areas have charging capabilities. More than 35,000 kilometers of intelligent connected vehicle testing roads have been built, and vehicle-to-grid interaction and autonomous driving technologies are gradually moving from science fiction into reality.
04 Chinese Brands Go Global
In 2024, Chinese companies occupied 5 and 6 of the top 10 positions in global new energy vehicle sales and power battery installations, respectively. In 2025, Chinese brands accounted for 24 of the top 100 most valuable automotive brands globally, nearly a quarter, according to Brand Finance, a UK-based brand valuation agency. my country has ranked first globally in new energy vehicle exports for two consecutive years and power battery exports for five consecutive years, with products sold to over 70 countries and regions, continuously enhancing the “shining name card” of “Made in China.”
Overall, over the past five years, my country has seized the opportunities presented by electrification and intelligentization, comprehensively promoting technological innovation, application, and infrastructure construction, significantly improving the overall competitiveness of my country’s automotive industry and generating substantial economic and social benefits.
my country’s annual consumption of new energy vehicles exceeds 2 trillion yuan, driving sales across the entire industry chain to nearly 10 trillion yuan, and cumulatively reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 200 million tons, making a significant contribution to economic and social development.
