Recently, the new international standard proposal for “Shipborne Electric Vehicle Fire Monitoring and Early Warning Technology and Its Test Method” jointly proposed by COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers and Guangzhou Shipyard International was successfully approved at the ISO/ISE plenary meeting of the International Organization for Standardization’s Ship and Marine Technical Committee. This is the first international standard proposal led by my country in the field of new energy vehicle shipping safety, marking that China’s technical solutions have officially entered the global rule-making stage.
- Accumulation of strength and fruitful results in standardization construction. The successful establishment of this international standard is a milestone for COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers to adhere to the strategy of “technological innovation to empower safety control”, and it is also a concentrated embodiment of the company’s standardization system.
- Patent foundation In the research on key technologies for new energy safe transportation, 17 core invention patents such as “An intelligent monitoring system on a seagoing cargo ship and its test and acceptance method” have been obtained and applied.
- Group standard leadership The successful release of group standards such as “Guidelines for the Application of Ship Video Surveillance Systems” has effectively promoted the standardized development of the industry. 03 Digital Benchmark
As the world’s first ship that meets the CCS “Guidelines for Digital Ship Delivery”, the “Yuan Haikou” ship relies on the CSBC data sharing platform and blockchain technology to achieve efficient data interoperability in the entire process of design, construction, inspection, and operation and maintenance, and has established a “Chinese paradigm” that can be referenced and replicated for the intelligent transformation of the global shipbuilding industry.
2. International stage, professional voice is sonorous and powerful
The standard proposal was led by COSCO Shipping Specialized Cargo and Guangzhou Shipyard International on April 16, 2025, and more than 20 industry authoritative experts from domestic shipyards, maritime bureaus, classification societies, and firefighting units were organized to review and promote it.
Relevant personnel of Yuanhai Car Ship Company actively participated, and Assistant General Manager Huang Shiwu answered the experts’ questions in detail. The proposal was highly recognized by the experts present, and they unanimously agreed to recommend it to the plenary meeting of the International Organization for Standardization to promote it to become an international standard for the industry.
On May 1, 2025, at the plenary meeting of the ISO/ISE Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization, Yuanhai Car Ship faced technical experts from all over the world and conducted a professional defense and technical explanation for more than 2 hours. With its forward-looking, innovative and solid practical foundation, the proposal has won high recognition from international experts and finally successfully passed the project review.
3. Innovation-driven, building a solid safety line for new energy shipping
In recent years, with the rapid growth of China’s new energy vehicle exports, maritime safety risk control has become a new issue in the global shipping industry. COSCO SHIPPING Special Transport has taken on the heavy responsibility and continued to build a solid safety line from the aspects of technology first, system breakthrough and standard guidance.
（1）Technology first
In-depth participation in the preparation of the China Classification Society’s “Technical Guidelines for Safety of Ro-Ro Transport of New Energy Vehicles”, filling the gap in relevant domestic standards. The guideline is forward-looking in the fields of fire prevention and control, electrical equipment protection, etc., and its key technical requirements such as battery protection and cabin ventilation are ahead of the current international level.
（2）System breakthrough
Since September 2022, COSCO SHIPPING Special Transport’s Far Ocean Car Ship has jointly developed the “Car Ship Intelligent Monitoring System” with Ship Technology Engineering and other units. The system integrates cutting-edge technologies such as infrared temperature imaging, AI image recognition, and edge computing to achieve real-time monitoring of “one vehicle, one code, and one location” throughout the entire process, provide accurate high-temperature warnings and ultra-high-temperature alarms, and meet the safety management requirements of “sensing the entire process of ship transportation and preventing and resolving major risks”. It has been successfully applied on many ships.
（3）Standards Lead
Based on the successful practice of the intelligent monitoring system, in March 2025, COSCO Shipping Special Transport Digitalization Department took the lead, jointly with Special Transport Ship Management Department, Yuanhai Car Shipping Company, Ship Technology Engineering and China Shipbuilding International and other units to jointly refine core technologies, and formally conceived and proposed the “Shipborne Electric Vehicle Fire Alarm Monitoring and Pre-alarm Technology and Its Test Method” International Standard Proposal.
