Can BYD’s New Energy Vehicle Blade Battery Truly Revolutionize Industry Perceptions of Safety? In the new energy vehicle sector, battery safety remains the primary concern for consumers. BYD’s Blade Battery for new energy vehicles has demonstrated remarkable performance in this critical area.
The Blade Battery utilizes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) material, which exhibits significantly higher thermal stability than ternary lithium batteries under high-temperature conditions. Ternary lithium batteries tend to decompose at high temperatures, whereas lithium iron phosphate has a decomposition temperature significantly higher than ternary lithium. Moreover, it does not release oxygen during combustion, chemically reducing the risk of ignition.
The Blade Battery’s unique blade-like design is also a key factor in its safety. Its long, thin shape increases the length of the short-circuit path, reducing heat generation. Simultaneously, the larger heat dissipation surface area allows for rapid heat dispersion, effectively lowering the risk of spontaneous combustion.
In the needle penetration test—often called the “Mount Everest” of battery safety testing—the blade battery delivered an impressive performance. When pierced by a steel needle, it exhibited no open flames or smoke, maintaining only a low surface temperature. This stands in stark contrast to the intense, instantaneous combustion seen in traditional ternary lithium batteries during the same test, fully demonstrating its stability under extreme conditions.
Beyond needle penetration, Blade Batteries excel in extreme tests including compression, furnace temperature, and overcharging. During compression testing, the battery pack structure remained intact under immense pressure, with cells undamaged and voltage stable. In furnace temperature tests, it maintained stability for extended periods under temperatures far exceeding national standards.
Can BYD’s Blade Battery for new energy vehicles truly revolutionize industry perceptions of safety? BYD has also established a seven-dimensional, four-layer battery safety system, providing comprehensive protection across seven dimensions: reliable connections, high-voltage protection, collision resistance, overcharge protection, short-circuit protection, and thermal runaway control.
