Can Domestic Chips Become the “Chinese Core” of New Energy Vehicle Components? Amid the booming development of the new energy vehicle industry, domestic chips are advancing rapidly toward the vision of a “Chinese Core.” However, this journey presents both opportunities and multiple challenges.
Domestic chips have achieved key breakthroughs in certain areas, with the localization rate of chips in some new energy vehicle battery, motor, and control systems exceeding 50%, injecting strong momentum into the industry. While high-end chips for smart cockpits and autonomous driving remain dominated by international giants, domestic manufacturers are catching up at an astonishing pace. The localization rate of smart cockpit SOC chips has surpassed double digits, with some products approaching international advanced levels in performance.
The rise of domestic chips relies heavily on robust national strategic support and collaborative innovation across the entire industrial chain. At the policy level, a series of supportive measures—from top-level design to local initiatives—have cultivated fertile ground for the chip industry. Technologically, continuous breakthroughs have been achieved in areas such as chip design and packaging/testing.
Regarding technological barriers, gaps persist in high-end chip design capabilities and manufacturing processes compared to international leaders, particularly in core metrics like computing power and integration density. Domestic chips require sustained breakthroughs in these areas. Longer validation cycles and limited in-vehicle deployment experience among domestic chips lead automakers to adopt a cautious approach in procurement.
Can domestic chips become the “Chinese heart” powering new energy vehicle components? Facing these challenges, domestic chip companies are embracing change with an open mindset.
Firstly, Building end-to-end capabilities from design to manufacturing through vertical integration and strategic partnerships.
Secondly, Strengthening collaborations with universities and research institutions to deepen industry-academia-research integration and accelerate technological iteration.
The vision of domestic chips becoming the “Chinese heart” of new energy vehicles is not out of reach. Domestic chips are poised to play a more pivotal role in the next phase of new energy vehicle intelligence and electrification.
