According to the global electric vehicle (pure electric + plug-in hybrid) sales data of the research organization CleanTechnica, in April 2025, the global electric vehicle registration volume reached 1.5 million, a year-on-year increase of 22% and a month-on-month decrease of 6.3%. Among them, the registration volume of pure electric vehicles was 1 million, a year-on-year increase of 26%, and the registration volume of plug-in hybrid vehicles was 500,000, a year-on-year increase of 15%. The overall electric vehicle market share was 22% (pure electric vehicle market share was 15%), a decrease of 3 percentage points from March.

Pure electric sales accounted for 66% of the total electric vehicle sales, an increase of 3 percentage points from the end of 2024. It can be seen that 2025 will be a year of active development of pure electric vehicles. In addition, hybrid vehicles such as oil-electric vehicles accounted for 14% of the global total sales, plus the 22% market share of electric vehicles, indicating that more than one-third of the global sales have been electrified.

In April, the global best-selling electric vehicle list underwent major changes. Tesla Model Y, which has dominated the list for nearly three years, was surpassed. BYD Song topped the list and became the sales champion in April with a monthly sales of 51,500. However, its sales fell by 15% compared with April 2024. Due to the emergence of models such as Song L and Haishi 07 EV, BYD Song’s sales in China have been much worse than before, but in the EU (sales> 5,000 units), Turkey (3,700 units), Brazil (3,100 units) and other places, BYD Song is still “in its prime”. Tesla Model Y sold 50,889 units, a year-on-year decrease of 29%, but the gap with the first place was only 660 units. The third place came from BYD Haiou, with 37,256 units delivered in April, replacing the third place Tesla Model 3 in March. This month, Tesla Model 3 sold 27,796 units, ranking 7th. Geely Xingyuan’s sales volume remained above 30,000 units, ranking 4th, up 2 places. With the increase in domestic market delivery volume, Geely Xingyuan is expected to climb to the third place on the list. Wuling Hongguang MINIEV, which ranked 4th last month, dropped one place to 5th place with sales of 28,999 units.

Comparing the top ten best-selling models in April 2024, in addition to the change of the champion and the decline in the momentum of Tesla’s dual series, the “Chinese brand” content in the list has risen again. In April 24, Chinese brands occupied 7 seats. One year later, the top ten were all taken by Chinese brands; the sales of the high-priced models, such as the M9 and Model Y, declined. At the same time, Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, BYD Dolphin Mini, Geely Xingyuan and other low-priced cars were collectively listed, which means that the global new energy market has shifted from “high-end taste” to popularization of rigid demand, and cost performance has become the core driving force.

In terms of cumulative sales ranking from January to April 2025, Tesla Model Y still maintains the championship position, followed by BYD Song and Tesla Model 3, and this situation is expected to continue until the end of 2025.

In the list of best-selling brands in April, Geely surpassed Tesla and became the runner-up in sales in April. Specifically, the champion still comes from BYD, with a total of 346,986 vehicles delivered, accounting for 23.9% of the market share. With a rich portfolio of models, Geely Auto delivered 94,510 vehicles and won the second place in global sales, while Tesla delivered 82,001 vehicles, ranking third. Compared with March, Tesla’s sales decreased by nearly 70,000 vehicles, a month-on-month decline of 45.9%. The fourth place came from Wuling, with a total of 56,438 vehicles delivered. Next is Volkswagen and BMW, both of which are competing for the sales champion among traditional car brands.

The Leapmotor brand, which has been developing strongly in recent months, won 41,039 sales this month, ranking seventh. Xpeng’s sales this month reached 35,045 units, up 273% year-on-year, ranking 8th. Relying on the increase in sales in China and Europe, Toyota delivered a total of 30,430 units, ranking 10th on the list. In addition, Denza’s exports to Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand pushed its sales to 17,822 units, ranking 19th on the list.

In the registration statistics of vehicle manufacturers, BYD’s market share has increased again to 24.7%, with a significant lead. The runner-up Geely has a market share of 11.3%, an increase of 3 percentage points compared to the end of 2024. The third-place Tesla is limited by the decline in sales, and its market share has dropped to 7.6%, a decrease of 2.7 percentage points compared to the end of 2024.

If only pure electric vehicles are counted, BYD’s registration volume is still the world’s first, with a market share of 16.7%, Geely is the runner-up, with a market share of 11.6%, and the third-place Tesla has a market share of 11.4%, only 0.2 percentage points behind Geely.
