We all know that the battery life of new energy vehicles will be “broken” in winter. Why does the battery life of your car drop so quickly in the hot summer? According to relevant data, after being exposed to the sun in summer, the battery life of new energy vehicles will be reduced by an average of 25%-30%. Why is this?
Battery performance: “Battery life assassin” under high temperature
New energy vehicle batteries are extremely sensitive to temperature. The operating temperature is usually between 20℃ and 35℃. Too low or too high temperature will affect battery performance. When the vehicle is exposed to the sun, the battery temperature may soar to more than 50℃, resulting in:
❶ Reduced battery activity: High temperature will inhibit the chemical reaction rate inside the battery, reduce battery activity, reduce the battery discharge capacity, and shorten the battery life.
❷ BMS (battery management system) limits output: To avoid overheating and damage to the battery, the battery management system will automatically reduce power output, resulting in slower acceleration and reduced battery life.
❸ Increased energy consumption: Under high temperature, the power consumption of the onboard air conditioner can reach more than 3kW, accounting for 25%-30% of the vehicle’s energy consumption. At the same time, the continuous operation of the battery temperature control system will also consume extra power, further affecting the battery life.
Countermeasures:
❶ Use the “charging pre-cooling” function:
Many new energy vehicles (such as Tesla, Weilai, Xiaopeng, etc.) are equipped with the “charging pre-cooling” function, but many car owners are not aware of its function. It can pre-cool the battery before charging and reduce the battery temperature to a more ideal range.
In hot summer weather, it is recommended that car owners remotely start battery cooling through the car computer or APP 10-15 minutes before charging, which can effectively improve charging efficiency, reduce battery loss caused by high temperature, and extend the battery life.
❷ Use “smart charging mode”:
“smart charging mode” can automatically adjust the charging current and voltage according to the current state of the battery and the ambient temperature. Reduce power at high temperatures to avoid excessive battery temperature, and optimize the charging strategy according to the health of the battery.
The owner only needs to select “smart charging mode” when charging, and the vehicle will automatically complete the subsequent operations. If charging is done at night, the electricity bill is still low, saving money and protecting the car~
Tire resistance: “invisible burden” under high temperature
Under the scorching sun, the road surface temperature rises, and the rubber tread becomes soft. This “high temperature softening” phenomenon will increase the rolling resistance of the tire, which means that more electricity is needed and the cruising range will also shrink quietly.
Coping strategies:
Check the tire pressure regularly (recommended once a month), and adjust the tire pressure to the recommended value in summer, generally within the range of 2.1-2.2bar, which can not only reduce rolling resistance, but also effectively improve the cruising range. At the same time, check the degree of tire wear, and replace it in time when the tread pattern depth is less than 1.6mm to ensure driving safety.
The cruising range drops quickly in summer, the number of charging times increases, and the wallet shrinks quickly? Don’t panic~ Now participate in the “Charging Weekly Gift” event, there are many surprise benefits, charging is more cost-effective, and your travel “cruising range” is finally!
